Our Mission

The Reston-Herndon Health Information Cooperative is a non-profit organization focused on developing useful, secure lifetime health records under patient control.

Such records can both improve your care and contribute to the common good, as you see fit, via research and public health.

Although lifetime health records have been a goal of every president since George W. Bush, no such records exist.

Our Current Initiatives

The Reston-Herndon Lifetime Health Record Project - Phase 1

In Phase I, we plan for around 30 volunteers, divided into teams of 10, to assist three developer teams that pledge to provide secure repositories for lifetime health records and to build and maintain those records for the volunteers. The volunteers will create individual Health Data Directives to direct who can use elements of their health data and will choose the developer teams.

The Reston-Herndon Lifetime Health Record Project - Phase 2

Phase 2 will allow any individuals in the Reston-Herndon area to build and maintain a lifetime health record, stored in one of the repositories created in Phase 1. Our goal is that our community demonstration of lifetime records will lead to wider implementation in Fairfax and eventually throughout the United States.

Facilitating uses of your health records after death

There are no established ways to share your health data after your death. In the AI era, your data, combined with that of many others, could lead into insights into better care. We will coordinate with the National Health Council, the umbrella organization of patient advocacy organizations, to establish channels to gift your records for research. In addition, if you have chosen to be an organ donator or to donate your body for medical education or other research, your health information does not transfer easily with your organs or body. We will work with the local organizations that facilitate organ and body donation to allow your health information to accompany your donation.
